There was much discussion about how California Redwood makes the better wood chart. Some people even suggest that sign only use "Clear All Heart" Redwood, most of whom are old forests. Well, sorry, I do not care how well managed or thoughtful - Old growth Redwood is not a sustainable resource. These same people often Redwood suggest that owns and maintains the paint better than Cedar - Western Cedar that not even close. I fear that these people are all wrong!
First is Importantly, the Western Red Cedar and California Redwood are really the same species (taxonomic hierarchy of an organism, eg, gender, family, order, class, etc) and many similarities. The biggest difference is that western red cedar has a much greater structural integrity for two fundamental reasons. First, the Western Red Cedar has a much greater resistance to flexion (the ability to bend without breaking or fragmentation) of California Redwood. Hydro-electric poles are often made of red cedar West rather than California Redwood because vibrations in the environment around the dam would result in the California Redwood to crack. Second, the density of the California Redwood, Western Red Cedar, and also contains more oils. For these reasons, Redwood is more difficult to hit, do not retain stains and paints well, and is divided into Redwood screws hold together.
Speaking of oil, Red Cedar also contains natural oils. Unique aroma of cedar is naturally thujaplicins in his heart. These compounds resist moisture and are toxic to the fungi that cause putrefaction and insects and preserve the wood against rot allow time exciting. It is exceptional dimensional stability of western red cedar makes it so good for use in high humidity.
Red Cedar is lightweight, has joinery, accepts finishes easily and has exceptional dimensional stability and durability legendary. The western red cedar is superior in almost all purposes in attractive appearance and resistance time is important. Cedar Rocks!
