Calculate the frequency of the red light emitted by a neon sign with a wavelength of 659.9 nm.?
2) Calculate the energy of the violet light emitted by a hydrogen atom with a wavelength of 410.1 nm
3) Calculate the wavelength of an electron (m=9.11 x 10^-28g) moving at 3.66 x 10^6 m/s.
I'm way in over my head here. Please help me understand. I will appreciate it immensely!
1. Calculate frequency given wavelength using the equation below:
speed of light = frequency x wavelength.
Look up the speed of light. Watch the units (wavelength is in nm, speed of light is in m/s).
2. Use the equation above to convert wavelength to frequency, then use the equation below to find the energy:
E = Planck's constant x frequency.
3. Use the de Broglie equation to find wavelength of a particle, given mass and velocity:
wavelength = Planck's constant / [mass x velocity].
This equation will work for your problem since the electron is not moving anywhere near the speed of light.
