A fine example of the quality of pubs that can be found in Essex is the winner of the 'Best Traditional Pub' Award at the Essex Food & Drinks Awards 2008, The Axe & Compasses in Aythorpe Roding, Dunmow. Approximately 20 minutes from Chelmsford and with garden areas catering for adults and children alike, The Axe & Compasses is without doubt one of the finest Pubs in Essex.
Situated not far from Dunmow in the nearby town of Margaretting, just off the A12, is their sister pub The Red Lion. A 17th Century 'Olde Worlde' pub that plays host to events throughout the year such as Traditional Folk Music and Dancing to various Car Shows.

Awarded 4 Star Inn Status by Visit Britain, the name as it suggests is in reference to Lord Nelson's famous warship 'HMS Victory'.
